Who Does Awakening Counseling & Coaching Serve?

I work with people affected by cancer who want to manage the experience more easily and therefore suffer less.

“People affected by cancer” includes those who have had a cancer diagnosis, those who have completed treatment (maybe recently, maybe years ago), and the spouses, partners, family members, and friends of people who have had a diagnosis.

Having cancer is a difficult experience in and of itself…but then there are so many challenges “piled on top of it” that can make it even more painful. Other people’s reactions and advice, an overwhelming amount of information, the practical problems of coping with treatment, relationship issues, communication problems, work-related challenges…these things can be managed more effectively so that you don’t suffer needlessly.

Are any of the following statements are true for you?

You feel like the bottom has dropped out of your life or like your life has been turned upside down with the cancer diagnosis. Sometimes you’re not sure how to put one foot in front of the other to get through this experience.

You feel like you’re embarking on unknown territory and things feel out of control and overwhelming. You are experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions and constant changes in your mind and body. You would like to feel more in control of the process, but you’re not sure how.

The fear, anxiety, and grief are getting to be too much. Fears seem to be cropping up daily and you have anxiety about what to do and even what to think. You’re wondering if it is truly possible to live one day at a time, which is easy to say but so hard to do. You’re experiencing one loss after another…loss of energy and vitality, loss of control, loss of confidence and trust in your body, loss of the life you thought you’d have.

You feel alone and alienated. As much as everyone around you tries to understand what you’re going through, you still feel isolated, as though they can’t possibly understand. Perhaps you have not been able to find a specialized counselor or coach in your geographic area.

Can working with Awakening help you?

It can help you if you have these values:

  • You’re no longer willing to suffer needlessly.
  • You want to cope with and manage the cancer experience more effectively and you are willing to do what it takes to struggle less.
  • You are willing to learn new strategies and are open to trying different approaches to dealing with problems than you have used before.
  • You want to take responsibility for your own experience. You want to make the quality of your life the best it can be, despite illness.
